Foreword

Sato Sakura Museum is delighted to present the upcoming Nihonga group exhibition titled “The 5th FROM – The Exhibition of Japanese Paintings in Each Artist’s Style -.”
Established in 2020, the FROM group consists of artists dedicated to shaping the future of Nihonga Japanese painting through research, experimentation, and presentation. The group’s name reflects the unity of artists “FROM” diverse backgrounds and affiliations, sharing a common objective. It also embodies their intention to experiment with contemporary Nihonga in their unique ways and communicate its significance to future generations “FROM” exhibitions.
The exhibition will feature works by eight artists: Kazutoshi Oshimoto, Mao Kawasaki, Meiko Kinoshita, Hiroko Takeda, Shugo Tajima, Kohei Nagasawa, Mikiko Noji, and Megumi Yamaura. While rooted in the traditional techniques of Nihonga, these artists explore free-form painting expressions infused with modern sensibilities.
Join us as we showcase a diverse array of works from these eight talented artists, with a focus on large-scale pieces. We hope you will enjoy the charming collection of art that captures the essence of contemporary Nihonga painting.

Message from the artist

We are pleased to announce “The 5 th FROM – The Exhibition of Japanese Paintings in Each Artist’s Style -.”
This group exhibition features large-scale works by eight artists focusing on “Nihonga,” or traditional Japanese painting.
As the societal perception of the term “Nihonga” evolves over time, the participating artists each bring their unique perspectives and approaches to the table. The significance of this group exhibition lies in the juxtaposition, collision, and resonance of the artists’ works, from which we hope to witness the essence of “contemporary Nihonga” and the more universal “contemporary painting.”
We believe that working on large-scale paintings will motivate artists to continuously explore creativity and challenge themselves, ultimately expanding their individual potential.
We kindly invite you to attend and appreciate the exhibition, and we would be grateful for your candid critiques.

In organizing this event, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Sato Sakura Museum and all the parties involved for their tremendous support and contributions.
