Foreword

Sato Sakura Museum is proud to present the 12th Sato Sakura Museum ‘Ōka-Sho Award’ Exhibition.
Sato Sakura Museum, a museum specializing in contemporary nihonga (Japanese-style paintings), opened in 2012 on the banks of the Meguro River, a location renowned as a cherry blossom viewing spot. The Ōka-Sho Award Exhibition was originally conceived to commemorate the first anniversary of the museum’s opening.
We commission young and promising nihonga artists to create paintings based on the theme of ‘sakura’, or cherry blossoms—a theme deeply rooted in the tradition of nihonga. We purchase all commissioned paintings, select award-winning paintings, and exhibit them to the public. The Ōka-Sho Award Exhibition is a competition-style exhibition organized to help visitors discover the beauty of nihonga and pass on its appeal to future generations.
This year marks the 12th edition of the Ōka-Sho Award Exhibition, held annually during the sakura season. With more than 300 submissions in total, it has drawn attention as a gateway to success for young nihonga painters throughout Japan.
The judges for the 12th Ōka-Sho Award Exhibition are the nihonga artists Shigetomo Kurashima, Koichi Takeuchi, Chinami Nakajima, and Nobuyoshi Watanabe. This year’s exhibition features ambitious works from 30 young and promising nihonga painters, all of which depict the common theme of ‘sakura’ using different approaches. As with all previous editions of the Ōka-Sho Award Exhibition, this year’s exhibited works bring a fresh perspective to the world of contemporary nihonga paintings. We hope you will enjoy these fascinating nihonga by spirited, up-and-coming artists who are sure to play leading roles in the world of nihonga in the future.
Last but not least, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone involved for their invaluable cooperation in organizing this exhibition.
