Foreword

We are proud to announce that Sato Sakura Museum will be hosting the “Ryo – Enjoying Summer with Contemporary Japanese Painting” exhibition. Come and beat the summer heat that relentlessly hits each year by enjoying Japanese paintings that embody the art of “Ryo = staying cool” while enjoying the comfort of our air-conditioned museum.
Japanese artists often depict themes that resonate with the seasons. From iconic summer symbols like lotus flowers and morning glories to invigorating landscapes of water bodies and plateaus, there’s much to explore. Other than natural scenes, they also depict the charm of summer festivals, traditional Japanese attire like the yukata, and the graceful beauty of goldfish. We hope our collection, designed to stimulate your senses and memories, will help you stay cool and be amused at the same time.
This exhibition was curated from our collection, with a focus on pieces that capture the essence of “staying cool” while celebrating the joys of summer. We invite you to immerse yourself in the various scenes and atmospheres that encapsulate “staying cool,” as depicted by contemporary Japanese painters.
